Katarina Marcekova
I was born in Slovakia and since the year 2013, I am working as a tour guide on a freelance basis in Rome and its surrounding provinces. I live just outside Rome in beautiful Anguillara Sabazia. The first time I worked as a tour guide in a professional setting was in Sardinia. This was one year before I made being a tour guide my passion here in my current home. Apart from my native language Slovak, I also speak German, Italian, English, Czech and understand Spanish, French, Polish, and Slovenian.
More about what I do and why
I studied history and work in Rome, so my fascination with the local heritage is kind of like a professional “illness.” When I moved here, I could not help wanting to discover more
I live in Tuscia Viterbese and just by living here I discovered that there is a lot more to this region than only Rome. It’s magical, because just by simply walking in nature you can find relics of Etrurian or even Villanovian bronze sculptures, aqueducts, historic streets and so on.
What I’ve learned
What I find very gratifying is when people discover something new for themselves and learn that not everything in books and films is true. What I find discouraging: when they feel like after 3 days in Rome, they have seen everything. Impossible… Rome wasn´t built in a day!
Rome is too big of a magnet and difficult to avoid of course, but through my work I try to “lure” people more into the city’s outskirts and beautiful provinces surrounding it. There is much to learn, and I don’t want visitors to miss out.
Over the years, I also learned that people love anecdotes, especially the ones that make life in ancient times more relatable, acceptable or known.
I am a curious person who likes to go on hikes in my free time. One walk I especially enjoy is close to an old Etrurian street called Via Clodia where I can spend hours discovering its beauties. How I Work
