The world was not able to prevent the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas. But Afghanistan still holds an even greater treasure: a buried city that goes back 5000 years, to the Bronze Age. Archaeologists have already found a trove of gold and jewels,along with temples,Buddha statues and a fortress.Experts say that it surpasses even Bamiyan.This site is called Mes Aynak,and it is 20 kilometers outside of Kabul.ARCH International has discovered that this unique,truly priceless cultural heritage site is slated for destruction, because it sits atop a copper mine.In a year or less, dynamiting will begin and this lost city,with all of the knowledge it contains,will be lost forever. Archaeologists and mining engineers have assured us that,with care and effort,Afghanistan can reap the rewards of its natural resources while still preserving its ancient heritage.
