Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument
Sonoran Desert, Arizona
United States
Description of the Site
Established as a U.S national monument in 1937 and a UNESCO biosphere in 1976, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a nature reserve in Southern Arizona that is home to a diversity of wildlife and plants. Over 31 cacti species can be found in this park and creatures that have adapted to extreme conditions of the Sonoran Desert. This reserve is not only important for the biodiversity of the region, but also for its archaeological significance. There are many archaeological sites found throughout the area that contribute to the history of trade and settlement in the region. Evidence from archaeological investigations demonstrates that humans have been in the area as far back as 1,600 years ago. Archaeological evidence includes pottery, rock art, projectile points, and much more. This national monument continues to be sacred land and home to the Tohono O’odham and Hia Ced O’odham.
The Threat
Since the late 1990s, there have been constant threats to this park. Recently, there has been destruction of sections of the park along the border in preparation for construction of the border wall, despite the park’s significance for biodiversity and indigenous peoples. Any construction in the area will destroy archaeological sites, sacred lands, and affect the park’s wildlife.
