Description of the Site
This site is a burial mound from the Neolithic Era. This type of burial mound is known as a “cairn”, or a memorial and burial site partially or completely built from stones. It is thought be an extremely important religious an cultural site for members of Irish royalty for thousands of years.
The Threat
Knock Iveagh has been endangered by an recently constructed “broadband mast” and wind turbine. There was a halt placed on further construction for 28 days on October 24th, 2017. The order to halt construction has since expired.
‘Knock Iveagh may not be as well known as other historic sites, such as Navan Fort, Newgrange of the Hill of Tara, however it is exceptionally rare and important’ a spokesperson for the Friends of Knock Iveagh told the Chronicle.
Efforts to Save Knock Iveagh
The “Friends of Knock Iveagh” campaign group has brought together concerned citizens from the surrounding area; the group has active members that are working together to make sure that no further construction near Knock Iveagh is allowed.
