St. Lambertus Cathedral

Immerath, Erkelenz
Germany

Status: 1-BLACK – It’s been irreparably destroyed

Description of the Site

The church is the St. Lambertus Catholic Cathedral in Immerath and was built in 1891 by the towns people. It was closed in October 2013, when it had its last church service and was then sold to RWE so that they could mine coal in the area. Not only the church was destroyed, but apparently the entire village of about 900 people were forced to move as well so that the entire village could be used for coal mining. There were many protestors there from Greenpeace and protested against the use of coal.
The slogan used at the destruction was “Wer Kultur zerstört, zerstört auch Menschen.”

The Threat

RWE has destroyed the church as well as the surrounding village in order to mine coal to sell to Belgium.

Efforts to Save St. Lambertus Cathedral

Greenpeace protested at the site along with some townspeople, but to no avail and the church was demolished.

Who Should Be Held Accountable?

RWE’s CEO Dr. Rolf Martin Schmitz as well as the mayor of Immerath Peter Jansen and NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet.
