In Memoriam – Peter Nicolaides

ARCH is sad to announce that we have lost a friend and a key supporter of our Greek chapter.
Peter Nicolaides was a professional diver, biologist-oceanographer and offshore engineer. After graduating from high-school in Athens he studied marine biology and hyperbaric physiology at the University of London.
In 1976 he worked on the Calypso with Jacques-Yves Cousteau, excavating the wreck of Antikythira and filming the Britannic, sister-ship of the Titanic. Later he was Diving Officer for the National Geographic Foundation Expedition in Greece. Subsequently he started his own company which worked with a number of scientific and governmental organizations.
But in addition to his professional achievements, Peter is remembered for his generosity as a teacher of diving, civil society defender of the Aegean, and a warmhearted person who celebrated life and friendships. He was a stalwart supporter of ARCH, we learned so much from him and will greatly miss his wisdom and energy.
